Riverdale Country School – Design Thinking for Educators: Dominic Randolph
Dominic Randolph, Head of Riverdale Country School, won a grant in 2012 from the E. Ford Foundation to teach Design Thinking to Educators and to spread its adaption and implementation across the country. This seven minute film documents the program and its successes.
Discovery and exploration. That’s what the Design Thinking process is all about. Keeping teachers actively involved in the curriculum design process allows their classes to keep students engaged and involved in their education.
Much like the process we go through when we are tasked with a new video project, there is no cookie cutter approach to educational strategies. The Design Thinking process is a methodology to help teachers process specialized problems and use their imagination to develop solutions. Experimentation is an invaluable tool in the creative process – the best idea for a given problem is rarely the first one conceived. Having the freedom to toy around with concepts before implementation is a necessity in developing the best possible end result.
The steps in Design Thinking? Discovery, interpretation, ideation, experimentation and evolution. The video shows educators working through each of the steps and demonstrates quite simply why the process is so helpful for so many of the individuals who use it.
