Super Bowl XLVI – Ad Recap
Advertising was not the forte of this SB, Super Bowl XLVI. Come to think of it, neither was football. Perhaps it was the half time show, as Madonna put on a dynamic and entertaining show. She still has some magic… no wonder Lady Gaga steals her best stuff from the Madonna playbook.
Anyway, the advertisers made a huge mistake, with nearly 75% of them previewing their ads ahead of time. I think you only preview a SUPER ad. The major ad themes seemed to be threefold: megaproductions, cute animals (monkeys and dogs) and babies. In the baby category the Doritos Slingshot Baby ad (I blogged about this one and the Doritos annual amateur filmmaker contest weeks ago) was the best, while ETRADE’s fell flat.
I have two favorites, Dog Track and Fiat. This Fiat ad is surely a play to male fantasies, hey sex still sells and I LOVE that tatoo on the back of the girl’s neck. She is 110% meow.
Not sure what Clint Eastwood was doing in that crappy ad for Chrysler at Half Time. For Clint’s sake I hope nobody saw it because it sure seemed like he sold out. Must need the dough.
Dog Track for Skechers is just plain funny. Love the ending. For me, this was the best ad of the Super Bowl.
I just couldn’t buy into the usual hype this year, despite being a Patriots fan.
Incidentally, my nominee for worst Super Bowl ad of the year? The Seinfeld Acura commercial. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY. What were you thinking Acura? I love your cars and I love Seinfeld (can’t stand Leno) but come on now! Get a new agency, ASAP, and stop wasting your money and time on ads that make you want to change the channel! Hate to say this, but I feel like Jerry is past his prime. Still, won’t stop me from watching old Seinfeld episodes. This commercial is really easy to track as it goes from bad, to stupid to SO STUPID you want to look for any sharp object to CUT YOUR WRISTS!
Well, there’s always next year.
